I don't really do too many music reviews, but I made an exception for this.

Welcome ladies and gentlemen. In case you haven't heard, the Internet is abuzz with this new singing sensation named Rebecca Black and her song "Friday." I figured that I would throw my opinion in on the topic. I've heard the song a good handful of times, I've read the lyrics, and I've seen the parodies... the mountain of parodies. The consensus is that she is terrible. Most of the things that have been said on YouTube have been hateful and mean spirited, but how bad can it really be?

The most important thing about a song is the music right? So let's start there. The music actually isn't all that bad. It's a typical pseudo club beat that is almost pop. It's not very memorable, but it isn't terrible. Unfortunately that's all I have to say on this because this isn't the biggest offender, it's just not memorable.

The second most important thing in a song is the singing. This is where the song's problems begin. Black's voice is a mix of auto tune and nasal passages. Her voice is so nasally that you would think it was Lois Griffen. It's grating and they auto tuned it. I don't understand this new sensation with auto tune. This stuff has been around for a long time, and people are just now using it. Auto tune is nice when it's used in moderation, not through the whole song. It's used to get people who can't sing put into the right key of the song. Look, if you can't sing, then admit it and either work on it through training, or learn a new skill.

The next most important thing in a song that rivals importance with the vocals, are the lyrics. These are the lyrics:

Friday by Rebecca Black:

(Yeah, Ah-Ah-Ah-Ah-Ah-Ark)Oo-ooh-ooh, hoo yeah, yeah

Yeah, yeahYeah-ah-ahYeah-ah-ahYeah-ah-ahYeah-ah-ahYeah, yeah, yeah

Seven A.M, waking up in the morning

Gotta be fresh, gotta go downstairs

Gotta have my bowl, gotta have cereal

Seein’ everything, the time is goin’

Tickin’ on and on, everybody’s rushin’

Gotta get down to the bus stop

Gotta catch my bus, I see my friends (My friends)

Kickin’ in the front seat Sittin’ in the back seat

Gotta make my mind up Which seat can I take?

(chorus)

It’s Friday, FridayGotta get down on Friday

Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend, weekend

Friday, FridayGettin’ down on Friday

Everybody’s lookin’ forward to the weekend

Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)Partyin’, partyin’ (Yeah)

Fun, fun, fun, funLookin’ forward to the weekend

7:45, we’re drivin’ on the highway

Cruisin’ so fast, I want time to fly

Fun, fun, think about fun

You know what it is I got this, you got this

My friend is by my right, I got this, you got this

Now you know it

Kickin’ in the front seat Sittin’ in the back seat

Gotta make my mind up Which seat can I take?
(chorus)

(bridge)

Yesterday was Thursday, Thursday

Today i-is Friday, Friday (Partyin’)

We-we-we so excited We so excited We gonna have a ball today

Tomorrow is Saturday

And Sunday comes after … wards

I don’t want this weekend to end

(Random Rapper)

R-B, Rebecca BlackSo chillin’ in the front seat (In the front seat)In the back seat (In the back seat)I’m drivin’, cruisin’ (Yeah, yeah)Fast lanes, switchin’ lanesWit’ a car up on my side (Woo!)(C’mon) Passin’ by is a school bus in front of meMakes tick tock, tick tock, wanna screamCheck my time, it’s Friday, it’s a weekendWe gonna have fun, c’mon, c’mon, y’all

(chorus x2)

The Good: I have to commend the girl on her simplicity. She doesn't over complicate things with vivid imagery, symbolism, or metaphor. It's just a song about the weekend and she is excited for it. She tells it like it is. Ok, so now those are the good things.

The Bad: I understand that this girl is only thirteen years old, but this is terrible. When I was thirteen, I was drawing and writing comic books about a giant mutant bobcat that fought a gigantic angry evil tic-tac. That was just one of the issues. Seriously though, when you are telling me the days of the week in the song, you are going too far. I can get that from a day calendar. Also, I know it is popular for musicians to cut out words to fit the flow of the song. Maybe the beat just doesn't complement the words so they have to "gangsta" it up a bit and take out some the words, but is it so hard to say "we're" instead of "we" over and over again?

This coupled with some terrible singing makes this one of the worst songs of this year. Yet here is the thing, she had over 50 million views when I last checked, and if I'm not mistaken, she is ranked very high on iTunes. That means people bought this. My friends, why would you support this? No, better question. Why would millions of people PAY for this? I hate turning this into a political argument, but this is what is wrong with America. I love this country, but we as a people are supporting MEDIOCRITY. By this girl being so popular we are saying "It's ok to be in the middle and not strive for the best, because in the end that's all that counts is you being an average person." The most influential people of our time were not ordinary people. They were great inventors and warriors that were the best of the best. We are not a nation built by just "average" people, no, we were built by people with a dream to do something great in life.

Look, my people, don't settle for mediocrity. If anything go for the top, the cream of the crop. If you go and look up the band Mutiny Within, you'll see the elite, yet they are nowhere near as popular as Ms. Black, although they deserve it and have worked for it. In an interview on Good Morning America, it was said that Ms. Black's parents paid for her to be put into the studio to do this. That's not the American dream at all.

Reach for the stars, learn new skills along the way, and make your dreams come true through your own achievements, and then you will know what greatness is. Greatness is not handed to you, it is reached by blood, sweat, tears, and hard work.

If anyone so happens to want to view this.... for..what ever reason. Here's the link: well... apparently Miss Black took her video down due to a copyright dispute. Sorry guys.

I got the lyrics from http://bloglyrics.net/rebecca-black-friday-lyrics-and-music-review.html and for length issues I amended them by putting in (chorus)(bridge) etc. This song belongs to Rebecca Black, and she can have it.

To be honest, I haven't heard anything about this song, or ms. friday, until i read your hub. However, this doesn't really surprise me, as I know Justin Bieber was discovered through youtube, so logic would dictate that it was bound to happen again for another young aspiring singer. I just hope people don't go crazy and start to compare her to other music legends, like Bieber has been compared to recently. Seriously, comparing Bieber to Michael Jackson, John Lennon and Elvis Presley? Ugh (face palms face in disgust) Oh well. I just hope this doesn't become a fad where you see all these adolescent teens try to become famous through youtube, but I have a feeling that won't be the case.

Anyways, thanks for the review, as i enjoyed reading it. You should put up the music video that your talking about onto this hub.

I heard the song and I just find it very funny.I think it's appalling how people have been so hateful and crude towards her, she is only 13 after all but you know what she's showed them all as she is almost as famous as Justin Bieber.

The first time I heard about her was some interview that reluctantly popped up from Lady Gaga mentioning her. With all do respect, Lady Gaga creeps me out like no other, but I still went to youtube and watched the video. Okay, actually the first ten seconds. I applaud her for her creativity, and willingness to try. She is very young and hopefully the comments do not scar her for life.

I feel bad that she is only 13 and so many people have insulted her singing. I mean, it is bad, but she is just a kid.

On a positive not, this gives me new hope that I can become a songwriter. My writing can't possibly be any worse than that.

I feel bad for this girl, you know the people that produced this song, or even her parents knew how this would sound. They had to have known what people would think of this, and I've considered maybe this was done on purpose and she was meant to be a joke? Either way the truth is just as you said it, it's terrible. I would also like to add that I appreciated your comparison with Justin Beiber, actually haven't thought of that, it's quite appropriate.

Woof...the lyrics suck! Is this a rip-off of "everybody's working for the weekend" or what? Voted up and useful. I'm so glad I'm not a teenager and have to be subjected to this crap anymore.

Helllloooo, Taco! I told you that one day I would sneak up on you and then, you would be paralyzed with surprise. I was on a "Hub Reading Tour," and thought of you instantly for you have commented on a lot of my hubs, so I thought Id spend some time with yours. Voted up and away on this hub. You, my man, seriously, are a very-talented writer in the open, not rough. Loved every word, but did I detect a glimmmer of old 80's rock band, Lover Boy, in Black's lyrics??? OH, I see that kittythedreamer thinks like me. But Black, my grandson loves her. But there again, he loves the gal who plays the lead on I Carly. But all in all, you never have written a bad hug. Glad to be in your corner yelling, "Hurry up. I am ready to get a snack!" Have a Merry Christmas. Seriously.

I came across this hub by accident, but it made me laugh. "Friday" is seriously one of the worst songs I've ever heard and Rebecca Black is one of the worst singers I've ever heard. I wonder what she would sound like without the autotune. I actually do feel bad for her, because she probably didn't expect such negativity.

Unfortunately, it isn't just 50 million Americans who paid for this - it's global. In fact, I think 50 million people from each corner of the world have paid for this.

I don't blame Black for having her hopes up, but this is what happens when you're a rich kid thinking you've got talent. While she doesn't deserve any of the popularity she "earned", she doesn't deserve the abuse she recieves - it's a form of bullying. Sure, there's critics out there (such as yourself) who're just being honest and not meaning to be offensive, but then there's those who will go out of their league to hurt her. That's not on.

If there was some honesty, Black could've been denied several months of abuse. But nooooo, money and promises of fame got her into that mess. Now it's the musical version of that thriller, 8MM.
